Trong xạ đen có chứa các chất: Fanavolnoid (chất chống oxy hóa có tác dụng phòng chống ung thư), Saponin Triterbenoid (có tác dụng chống nhiễm khuẩn), Quinon (có tác dụng làm cho tế bào ung thư hóa lỏng dễ tiêu)
Xạ đen có tên khoa học là Celastrus Hindsii Benth, có kỹ thuật trồng cây không quá phức tạp. Loài cây này thuộc cây bụi leo, không lông, lá không rụng theo mùa, chùm hoa ở ngọn và ở nách lá, dài 5 – 10cm. Cuống hoa dài 2 – 4mm, cánh hoa trắng, quả nang hình trứng, dài cỡ 1cm, nổ thành 3 mảnh. Hạt có áo hạt màu hồng, cây ra hoa vào tháng 3 – 5, ra quả từ tháng 8 – 12. Đến cuối năm 1999, đề tài của các bác sĩ Học viện Quân y được nghiệm thu, cây xạ đen chính thức được công nhận là một trong không nhiều những vị thuốc nam có tác dụng điều trị hỗ trợ bệnh nhân ung thư. Cuối năm 2002, người bệnh mới biết đến loài cây này qua câu chuyện của GS. Trung trong Chương trình Người đương thời (VTV3).
