Phượng Vĩ tán lá rộng, xanh tốt, hoa đẹp sắc, thường được trồng làm cây tạo cảnh quan, cây bóng mát trên các vỉa hè, đường phố, công viên, trường học.
Cây hoa Phượng là cây gỗ lớn cao từ 10 đến 15 m, vỏ thân màu xám trắng, nhẵn, phân cành nhánh nhiều, lớn, dài, mọc nghiêng, tán rộng. Lá kép lông chim 2 lần với 20 đôi lá phụ, lá rụng thưa vào mùa khô tháng 1 – 3 hàng năm, sắc lá có màu xanh bóng. Hoa nở đỏ rực vào những cơn mưa đầu mùa cuối tháng 4 đầu tháng 5. Hoa cụm lớn dài 20 – 30 cm, nang hoa xếp thưa, xòe rộng, hoa lớn màu đỏ tươi hay đỏ cam với cánh tràng có cuống dài, phiến rộng, dúm răn reo, trong đó có cánh lớn màu cam đỏ và các vạch đốm màu trắng, nhị có bao phấn cong màu đỏ.
