Kỹ thuật trồng cây sưa yêu cầu người trồng cần chú trọng trong khâu chọn giống. Đây là loài thực vật sống trên nhiều loại đất khác nhau như: đất đồi có độ dốc trung bình, đất đỏ, đất thịt nhẹ, đất pha cát và đất đồi đá sỏi
Cây Sưa là cây gỗ lớn, ưa sáng, sinh trưởng trung bình nhưng ở tuổi 1 – 2 sinh trưởng rất nhanh; cây vươn dài tới 4-5m và uốn cong như cần câu, đến cuối tuổi 3 sang tuổi 4 cây sẽ tự vươn thẳng. Theo kinh nghiệm của người dân, cây nào càng cong sẽ càng sinh trưởng càng mạnh. Cây sưa rất dẻo và dai, chống chịu bão gió rất tốt, cành sưa không bao giờ bị gẫy do gió bão, gốc sưa bị gió bão xô đổ nghiêng, một thời gian sau lại tự vươn thẳng được.
Hiện nay, cây sưa được gây trồng tại một số tỉnh ở miền Bắc như: Vĩnh Phúc, Phú Thọ, Yên Bái, Tuyên Quang, Thái Nguyên… Là cây ưa sáng, sưa thích nghi với nhiều loại đất và khí hậu khác nhau, có khả năng tái sinh hạt, chồi rất tốt.
